I hate my kitchen at home. It is laid out dumb, the appliances are old and tiny and positioned in monstrously awkward spots. Toss in my inherent laziness and I don’t cook or bake much. Josh’s kitchen, on the other hand, has the most perfect kitchen work triangle I ever done seen. Every time I’m there I just wanna MAKE ALL OF THE THINGS. Two people can work together happily and I tend not to knock over or burn as much stuff.
We decided to invite his family over for cocktails and a make-your-own taco buffet. I made FOUR KINDS OF MEAT (carne asada, chorizo, chicken and garlic shrimp), two kinds of guacamole and threw down every kind of yummy topping imaginable. It was a lot of work, we made it just down to the wire for their arrival and yet looked like we hadn’t broken a sweat.
The arc de triomphe though was my very first attempt at making buttertarts from scratch. They are a Canadian delicacy and one of my very favourite things but I tend to believe they are best left to the experts. I’ve even bought Josh some previously to try and then left them in the backseat of my car. So, I was determined. And other than them being a little darker than normal because we only had dark brown sugar on hand and not light … they were pretty close to the real deal. I made four kinds… chocolate chip, raisin, plain and pecan.
All told, it was super amounts of work but a whole lot of fun. It made me happy to impress the pants off his family and remember that I’m not half-bad in the kitchen when I have space and a desire to please. Two thumbs up. Will definitely attempt again.
